“Global Tides an online international studies academic journal at Seaver College founded in 2007, recently returned after being shut down in 2009. It expanded its borders by adding religion, humanities and social studies to its disciplinary topics. Global Tides” editors expect to progress from this fifth annual online edition to a semi-annual print publication in the near future.
The journal takes its name from its original division International Studies and Languages. “Global Tides” publishes well-developed thesis-driven research articles. Each of our four divisions — humanities social sciences religion and international studies — selects a small number of the very best written work produced on Pepperdine’s campus and publishes those articles in our online journal said junior Jordan Kahler, editor in chief of Global Tides.
According to Kahler, a series of associate directors objectively edit the articles, and a divisional editor oversees all of the submissions in an area of study.
Our peer editing process is double-blind to ensure the highest standards of impartiality are met Kahler said. This means submissions are culled of identifying information before they are distributed to members of the review board.”
Any Seaver College student can submit a paper to be published in “Global Tides.” The paper must follow the requirements listed on the website and fall within the range of given topics: religion social studies humanities or international studies.
“Global Tides” consists of several sections: scholarly essays book reviews photography competitions and the “Journey’s Journey” — narratives of Pepperdine students’ international experiences.
Kahler also hopes to reinforce that Pepperdine students are capable of writing to benefit the University and not just essays for class.
“At ‘Global Tides’ we intend to help create a culture of publication at Pepperdine University Kahler said. We want to recognize and honor students who are already producing graduate-level work.”
Junior Lauren Burnham an associate editor of the “Global Tides” — International Studies and Languages (ISL) journal expressed the future plans of the “Global Tides” editors.
“The main goal will be getting more people from our division involved as writers as reviewers and as editors Burnham said. We intend to attract interest to our top submissions in more than just the online journal publication and will display them in the SAC and seek other ways to give them more exposure.”
